Promotional exams are held four times a year, all ranks are awarded through the ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Association) by certified Instructors and Examiners. Dan (black belt) exams are also given at Master Camp and the ISKF Nationals for students testing for godan (5th degree) and above.
Competition is also a part of Shotokan practice, though not the main focus. Local, regional, national and even international competition is available. Standards are high and rules are strict, both to ensure the safest possible event and to demand the best of each competitor. Many ISKF black belts continue their training for decades, so these divisions are extremely competitive, with excellence on display!
The ISKF Master Camp is a full week of trainings and panels held every June near Philadelphia. Shotokan practitioners travel from all over the world to this event! Most students practice two or three times per day. There are a swimming pool, basketball courts and other recreational facilities. The Camp is held at Camp Green Lane near Harleysville, PA. The camp provides meals, lodging and training areas. Full and half week attendance packages are available. Full-week attendees are eligible to compete in the international goodwill tournament on the last day.
